Text Diff & Comparison Tool
Inspect differences between code snippets, contract revisions, or articles. Visual red/green highlighting clearly reveals every modified character and line.
What is the Text Diff & Comparison Tool?
This tool compares two text passages, code files, or configuration blocks side-by-side or inline, highlighting additions, deletions, and character-level edits client-side.
Myers Difference Algorithm and Longest Common Subsequence (LCS)
The comparison engine builds a directed acyclic edit graph where diagonal edges represent identical lines and orthogonal steps represent insertions or deletions. Myers algorithm navigates this graph in O(ND) time (where N is total length and D is edit distance), finding the shortest path from origin to destination. Once line-level differences are determined, an intra-line diff highlights exact character modifications.
How to Use the Text Diff & Comparison Tool
Enter Original Text
Paste or upload the baseline reference document into the left editor.
Enter Modified Text
Paste or upload the updated document into the right editor.
Inspect Highlighted Diffs
Toggle between Split (side-by-side) and Unified view. Scroll to jump through highlighted additions and deletions.
Key Settings & Parameters
| Setting | What It Controls | Recommended Default |
|---|---|---|
| Ignore Whitespace | Ignores spaces, tabs, and line-ending variations (CRLF vs LF) so only meaningful text changes are highlighted. | Enable when comparing code formatted with different linters |
| View Mode (Split vs Unified) | Split shows dual columns; Unified stacks additions and deletions in one continuous flow. | Split for wide desktop screens, Unified for mobile |
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
-
• Confusing line-ending discrepancies (CRLF vs LF) with actual text editsWindows uses \r\n whereas Linux/macOS uses \n. Enable "Ignore Whitespace" or normalize line endings if every line appears modified.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Use character-level diff highlighting to immediately spot single-character typos or misplaced punctuation inside long paragraphs.
Local Processing Guarantee
Zero server uploads. Proprietary code, secrets, and private legal redlines never leave your computer.
When to Use
- Comparing revised legal contract clauses against the original counter-offer.
- Reviewing code snippets or configuration files (YAML, JSON, .env) before deploying.
- Spotting subtle editorial revisions in translated or edited manuscripts.
Comparing binary images or compiled executable binaries (use dedicated binary hex diff tools for those).
- • Comparing exceptionally massive text files (>200,000 lines) may cause temporary browser memory strain during Myers graph traversal.
